FPWR Accomplishments
Since its inception in 2003, the Foundation for Prader-Willi Research has had a significant impact upon the field of Prader-Willi syndrome research. To date, the FPWR has:
- Committed more than $1,600,000 in support of PWS research
- Funded 40 high-quality research projects at top medical and research institutions around the world, with the resutling findings published in highly respected journals such as Nature Neuroscience, Proceedings of the National Academies of Sciences, Endocrinology, and BMC Genomics
- Originated and sponsored the annual Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill to raise awareness of the need for more federal funding for PWS research, resulting in the passage of a Congressional Resolution in support of PWS Research
- Co-sponsored the X Prize for Genomics, a project aimed at rapidly sequencing entire human genomes
- Created a partnership with the Salk Institute for Biological Studies that brings together three Salk Institute laboratories to study appetite regulation in PWS
- In November of 2009, FPWR partnered with the National Institutes of Health(NIH), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Prader-Willi Syndrome Association (USA), and FPWR-Canada to sponsor of the first multidisciplinary workshop on Prader-Willi syndrome, held near the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland. The Prader-Willi Syndrome Research Strategy Workshop brought together more than 60 top scienitists in PWS and related fields to create a comprehensive research strategy for PWS.
